The Bible’s Idea About Hope

The Bible has a lot to say about hope.  Hope, after all, is the main thrust of the Gospels.  But the concept has its roots in the Old Testament.  We see it used in a varieties of uses. In I Chronicles 29:15 we see hope being something lacked, It can be taken only to sprout again (Job 14:7), and is in anticipation of future events (Genesis 49:18).  But the Hebrew word, miqveh, used there in Genesis 49 is actually found all the way back in the creation story.  It is used in Genesis 1:10 and describes the waters being gathered together.  In Exodus 7:19 we find again that the Hebrew word, miqveh, is used to describe a gathering of waters. The Hebrew word, then, when used to describe hope would mean a gathering of strength, patience, and endurance as you wait for the object of your hope.  A lack of hope on the other hand, would be a reservoir empty of  strength, patience, and endurance.

The New Testament brings the concept of hope to completion by putting our hope in one place – Jesus Christ, His finished work on the cross, and the future salvation of our bodies.  Looking forward to the restoration of all things in which Christ will recreate not only our bodies but the heavens and the earth is the ultimate hope.

Paul, in the book of Titus also describes hope as a catalyst for discipline:

“For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.”
Titus 2:11-14

Hope, then, gives us the ability to run towards a goal and not give up, gives us an ultimate destination, and gives us energy when we cannot see anything but the dark.  Our brains will shut down without hope.  We will stop trying. We need hope.  If you are low on hope, stop.  Get it.  You will need it to press on till the end.
